Chapter Seven

Madison

I wake early again, the bathing sunshine of the mountains seemingly adopting itself as my new alarm clock.

For a moment, I just lie here, quietly looking out the window, taking in everything in Logan’s bedroom.

There’s a sense of security I’ve never known before here. Although, it’s a kind of peace that has nothing to do with where I am, but who I’m with.

It’s different from the comfort of home. This feels more real, more grounding.

Like I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be, nestled in the embrace of a man who makes the whole world feel safe.

Even when I’m at home, behind locked doors in my tiny apartment, there’s always this low-level hum of anxiety that I can’t quite shake. But not here. Not now. Wrapped up in Logan’s arms, in a tiny cabin in the middle of the mountains…

Here, I feel like nothing can touch me.

I shift slightly, adjusting to get more comfortable, and the movement brings Logan’s big, muscular arm tighter around me. His body heat seeps through my skin, and I sigh softly, closing my eyes again.

This is nice. Better than nice. It’s perfect.

And that’s what scares me.

My pulse picks up as I stare at the wall in front of me, the reality of what I’m feeling starting to sink in.

I’m in love with him.

It’s not just the safety or the warmth—it’s him.

This mountain of a man, this rugged, gruff rescuer who has somehow burrowed his way into my heart in a matter of days. I shouldn’t feel this way about someone I barely know. Shouldn’t be so consumed by him. But I can’t help it.

Something about him pulls at me, tugging me deeper and deeper until I’m not sure I could get out if I tried.

A part of me wants to resist it, to protect myself from falling too hard, too fast.

But the other part—the bigger part—just wants to let go. To dive headfirst into whatever this is and never look back. Even though I know it’s dangerous. I know it could end in heartbreak, but I came here for a survival course, and maybe this is all part of it. Right?

That thought makes my mind drift to his job. The reality of what he does out here in Misty Peaks. Search and Rescue.

It’s not just a job. It’s dangerous, life-threatening work. He’s told me the stories, the friends he’s lost, the close-calls they’ve endured. It’s scary.

Of course, he’s a hero in every sense of the word. I’m a living, breathing example of that.

But every time he steps out that door, there’s a chance he might not come back. And my heart clenches painfully at the thought of anything happening to him.

I bite my lip, trying to push that thought aside.

I can’t think like that. I can’t start worrying about something that hasn’t even happened yet. Something that might not ever happen.

I shift slightly, turning in his arms until I’m facing him. He’s still asleep, his dark lashes fanned out against his cheeks, his stubble thicker than it was yesterday.
